Why I don’t exercise and what to do about it

September 16, 2023

If exercise were easy, everyone would be doing it! Unfortunately that’s not the case, less than half of Americans meet the recommended physical activity guidelines weekly. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db443.htm

This isn’t because no one wants to exercise (although im sure that true for some) but there are plenty of obstacles in the way. Generally speaking we form habits, some good and some bad, once a habit is formed it takes an incredible about of energy to change that habit. Lets look at some of the obstacles that we have to overcome in order to exercise and new habits you can put in place.

  • Lack of Time- Find available time slots- Spend a week looking at your daily activities and identify the 30 minute time slots you could use for physical activity. Choose activities you can fit in those slots (walking, jogging, etc) And you don’t have to get all 30 minutes a day in at the same time!
  • Social Support- Talk to your friends and family and explain what you want to do and lay out your goals. Ask them for help and accountability
  • Lack of Energy- Plan to exercise when you generally feel energetic and convince yourself you will have more energy afterward.
  • Lack of Motivation- Plan ahead, make your exercise a part of your daily activities. Invite a friend to exercise with you.
  • Fear of Injury- Choose activities you feel you can safely do, warm up and cool down, and choose age and skill level appropriate activites
  • Weather Conditions- Our weather in Dallas is always changing, wear appropriate clothes and alter your routine to make the most of the weather.
