Diabetes Statistics

November 19, 2023

Lets talk Diabetes statistics so that we can get to the point. Should I care? Is this really that big of a deal?

According to the ADA, in 2021 there were 38.4 million or 11.6% people in the US with diabetes. Of this, 2 million have type 1 diabetes (304,000 of those are children). There are 1.2 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed every year (1 in 100). Finally in 2021 there were 97.6 million people who had prediabetes (1 out of 3).

This shows that there are twice as many people who are prediabetic than diabetic. Here at Wheels of Giving, we think it is important that you know where you stand on the diabetes spectrum, which is why we encourage you to get an A1C test done so that you can know how much sugar is in your blood over the previous 3ish months.

Also in 2021 Diabetes was the 8th leading cause of death, with 103,000 death certificates listing Diabetes as the underlying cause of death. However also in 2021 there were 399,000 death certificates mentioning diabetes as a cause of death (not the primary cause but a contributing cause).

Answering the initial questions, yes you should care because more than likely you know someone who has/had diabetes and that number will continue to grow each year. Further becoming aware of how to prevent type 2 diabetes is information that is invaluable and our hope is that you can make the necessary lifestyle choices to prevent type 2 diabetes in your life!
